Film noir green screen

Film Noir is a style or genre of cinematographic film marked by a mood of pessimism, fatalism, and menace. The term was originally applied to American thriller or detective films made in the early 1940s. (Wikipedia, 2016)

Features of Film noir:
  • Most of them filmed in black and white to emphasises the shadows in the movie.
  • The background is usually set in the urban environment such as apartments and cities.
  • The lighting is one of the essential elements in the film noir as it not only creates shadows and darkness but also creates the mood of the scene.
  • Another important feature is smoke, we frequently have seen them in the film.
  • There are women who dressed extremely beautiful, unrealisable, promiscuous and seductive.
  • The props they used in the film commonly contains fedoras, suits, red lipstick and guns.

In week 6, we were dressing up for lighting session that inspired by the film noir genre. We filmed some greenscreen footages and photographies in the TV studios in order to experience the importance of process making.

As I mentioned above, lighting is one of the most important elements of the film noir. Thus we were learning how to use lighting to create shadows and emphasised the actors. We've moved lighting in different directions as well as adjust the camera angles down to create a huge shadow on the curtains. The huge shadow enables to give audiences a feeling of dangerous and mysterious, it is a great method to emphasise the atmosphere. The lighting also can focus on actor's face, which parts of them lighted in brighten and parts of them hide under shadows. The effect created the strong visual contrasts on the actor. It works very well for the scene as this suggests that the actor's mysterious and dangerous.

After photography session, I've moved on the greenscreen. I did not experience much lighting and camera work in here because my job was an actress, who have to posture in front of the camera all the time. To be honest, acting was not an easy job. I had to tilt legs, leaned the elbow on the knee and turned head over to look away. I kept this posture for 20 minutes and felt paralysis after finish filming.

Overall, this was an enjoyable experience that we gained the comprehensive of the filming process, thematic visual systems, creating psychological emphasis scenes and visual communication in the film.
