360 Challenge Research (Week 7)

In week 7, we are going to choose a theme related to our personal interests in animation. We have to find information from a range of sources that include:
  • 2 quotes from two experts/authorities
  • 3 or more eye-catching images
  • 2 magazine/newspapers
  • 2 chapter in a library book
  • Several Websites
The theme I'm going to do is the eyes because I'm always interested in how people pass the emotions through their eyes. In the two following weeks, I'm going to investigate how would eyes change when people feel happy, worry, angry, sad and so on.

Library research

<The Animator's Survival Kit>

The photos below shows the techniques of expressive eyes that been described on the book of  ''Richard Williams''

Quote 1. Early Disney Studio advised that  ''If you're short of time, spend it on the eyes. The eyes are what people watch.'' (R. William, 2009, P325)

I strongly agree with the theory they said above that ''The eyes are the visible part of the brain directly connected to it. I think that's why we see the 'soul' or person revealed in the eyes'' (R. William, 2009, P325-326)
I frequently heard that the eyes are the window to the soul, the more clearness your eye is, the more purity your soul have. Our brain proceed the emotions through the eyes, when we feel scary, our pupil would dilate. When we lying, our pupil would rotate around because we scary to look directly at people. Our eyes are supremely expressive and we easily communicate with the eyes alone rather than body language.

<Character Animation>

In 3D character animation, the eyes will lead all movement of the face and body. It makes a character seem alive. The following photos showed that how to create the effective eyes to make character alive.

Always give your character something to look at either on screen or off. Even when a character is thinking, their eyes also could look up heavenwards for inspiration or down at the ground.
There are some knowledges I've learned from the book:

When character sees something you like, their pupils of the eyes will dilate and make the character look more attractive.
When a character is frightened, evil or hates somthing, the pupil will contrat into pinpoints.
When a character is surprised the eyes will bulge, emphasizing the whites of the eyes.

The photo below explained how can blinking eyes affect to the character. I've learned that with a standard blink, The eyelid will close slowly and open quickly. However, if you want to make the character look sleepy or stupid, animate the eyes with shut slowly and open slowly.

 The Master Guide to Drawing Anime

The eyes on anime are always different to 3D character as they are bigger and brighter in order to show the beauti of the characters.

For the anime characters, the girl eyes are usually drawn larger than boys. But they used same techniques, which sketched top and bottom with arched first, then add eyes between them. The most important things is to add multiple shines to the irises to give the eyes that glistening appeal.

Drawn to Life

In this book, it talks about the structure of the eyes that consist of eye lid, a side temple, bottomor and eye ball.
It also mentioned the relationship between eyebrow and eyes. When the eyes looked widely, the eyerown will raised up by muscle, and it will forced down when eyes becomes wrinkle.

Video of Blinking Eyes

(Jessica Skyler, 2016)

This video shows how are blinking eyes work. It's a really detailed frame by frame animation video that you can see the eyelips dropped down and the eyeballs rotate downward while she blinks eyes.
